From the 2009 Buick Open – Tuesday

July 28th, 2009

Titleist.com is on-site at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan for the 51st edition of the Buick Open, a tournament that dates back to 1958. The Titleist Tour Van has been buzzing with even more activity than usual, as this is the first week that it is carrying the next generation AP1, AP2, CB and MB irons that are scheduled to be introduced to the marketplace this fall. Several players (Greg Chalmers, Derek Fathauer, Bill Haas, Stephen Leaney, Marc Leishman, Darron Stiles, Kevin Na) worked with the new irons on the range for the first time, while others, including Tom Pernice, Jr. (New AP2), Colt Knost (New CB) and Johnson Wagner (New CB) played a practice round with them and decided to put them in the bag this week.

Longtime Titleist Brand Ambassador Brad Faxon, who is also in the field this week, was actually the first to play the New AP2 irons in competition two weeks ago, when he posted his best finish of the year at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee. A set of the New AP1 irons were also played in competition for the first time in Milwaukee, and will also be in that player’s bag this week in Michigan.

Improvements to the new AP2 irons have resulted in better feel as well as improved shot control and ground contact. The new AP1 irons offer better feel, more forgiveness, and an improved shape, particularly in the short irons. Look for more sets to be put into play in the coming weeks, and be sure to check back here and on Titleist.com for the latest information on all Titleist products. For now, be sure to check out the slide show for more information from the Buick Open.

A lot of activity is taking place this week in the Titleist Tour Van.

Hi Titleist,
I was wondering if there is any difference between the new AP2 710 and the new AP2 2010? Is it just groove difference or are they the same club? thank you

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on January 22, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Kelvin-
The new AP2 irons for 2010 are part of the 710 series, so they would be the same club.

Hello.
I really waana replace my current irons for new AP2.
My only concern is the rubber insert that I can see in the back of the face.
Is it durable and easy to keep clean?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on September 23, 2009 at 6:20 pm

David-
The AP2 irons, including the Tuned Feel System in the back cavity, are both durable and easy to clean.

Is it true that you can pre-order a set of the new AP1s? This would be the 2009 AP1s right? That is what a golf store in Scottsdale is telling me.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on September 23, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Ed-
All of the new irons, including the AP1s, are available for pre-order in authorized Titleist golf shops.

The new AP irons will be available worldwide later this year.

Are the new blades forged by the same forgery as the previous irons? In terms of feel obviously improved characteristics but are we looking at the same traditional Titleist blade in terms of feel and looks. I really like the feel and look of previous generation Titleist irons, just want to make sure I’m not pre ordering something unlike what I am used to.

Also, any idea the upgrade cost on KBS Tour Shafts, also do you have golf pride mcc grips as an upgrade?

Thanks,
Rob

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on September 23, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Rob-
The MB and CB irons will offer improved feel with a classic Titleist blade look. Please see your preferred Titleist golf shop to determine the cost of your clubs with the custom KBS Tour shaft. Custom grip options can be viewed on the grip listing page on Titleist.com.

Between AP1 and AP2, AP2 is going to be a closer match to the 762B.

Titleist are not going to release any new Drivers, woods or hybrids. They are releasing a new Vokey wedge that conform the new groove rule 2010. Titleist are using a 2 year cycle of all their gear. So you can expect new Drivers, Woods and Hybrids 2011.

I am 15 years old and a 2 handicapper. I was thinking about the AP2s, however the new AP2s look great. What is the difference with the new model?

Austin Brown wrote on September 13, 2009 at 10:54 am

If you are that good at 15 I would recommend getting some blades. I recommend blades because I, 15, was in your same situation. I couldn’t decide to get a cavity back, mid cavity, or blade. I got blades because my dad was switching to the AP2s as well. I absolutely love my Titleist 681 blades. I can work the ball much easier than the AP2s and i have something to work for. This is just my opinion, but I would recommend going down to your local golf pro and try out some blades.

Jack wrote on September 13, 2009 at 10:08 am

I am 15 as well and i play scratch golf. I Also play the AP1 and they are great. I have hit AP2 but it just wasn’t for me. The forgiveness is great and you can still work the ball. But if you feel the AP2s are better for your swing then go for it.

Jack wrote on September 12, 2009 at 12:10 pm

It all depends. I’m 6 and I’m a +8 handicap so I’m really good pretty much. You want the new one’s because, if you read the top, they have “better feel as well as improved shot control and ground contact,” but who am I to suggest…

Zanatta wrote on January 20, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Jack, you’re saying if you played at a course with a rating of 74, you will shoot 66 regularly? and im sure you play tips too right? Tips being 7200+ yards usually.

SaintGeorge wrote on September 3, 2009 at 10:32 am

I am a player that picks the ball. I used to play with Titleist 681 irons which were quite easy to hit well if the ball was picked. My question is which of the new irons would be preferable for a player that picks or sweeps the ball?

I know this is not what the discussion is about, but is Titleist coming out with a new line of Drivers for this fall/2010?

David wrote on September 9, 2009 at 11:29 pm

No. They come out with new clubs every two years. Drivers, Wedges, etc. came out for 2009, and new Irons will be for 2010. Drivers and etc. will be available for the 2011 season.

I’m looking at buying a new set of irons…I’m an aspiring player playing off a handicap of 11 but capable of scores in the late 70s & can see my handicap reducing in the future. I’ve been advised that the AP1s would be more suitable for me than the AP2s…could you please advise & also confirm if these are in the process of being replaced/upgraded…should I wait, etc

Yours sincerely

I'dRatherbeDrivingAtitleist wrote on September 8, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Andrew, If you are not exaggerating your HC and keeping legit scores buy the AP2s. Once you familiarize yourself with the reduced offset and are hitting cleanly; you wont regret it.

Hi,
i was looking into buying the D2 driver but i was just wondering if the new D4 is more of a players club and fast swing speed or a driver for a slower swing speed

Andy wrote on September 11, 2009 at 11:14 am

There is no D4 driver but all of the 909s are great. They can fit any swing type if fitted with the correct shaft for the swing.

John wrote on September 15, 2009 at 7:00 pm

There is a D4 driver, but it’s not in the new line up… prototype from the old heads. Honestly better off w/ any of the 909s.

Hi,

Im currently playing with the ZBs which i love but sometimes find them a little unforgiving if having an off day! Is the AP2 designed to be much more forgiving and especially the newer AP2 thats due to come out? Also how does this compare with the new CBs about to be released with regards handicaps targeted at?

Thanks in advance

Will the look at address of the new MB iron be more similar to the 690MB or will it look like the ZM? How will head size compare? Will the topline on the new MB be as thin as the 690MB or will it be thick like the ZM?

I want AP2s, I think I am going to wait for the new irons to come out but I just don’t know if I could wait that long…I have noticed it said that they will be available in golf shops in November, does that mean that they will be available on the website earlier?

George wrote on September 1, 2009 at 2:11 pm

I bought the AP2 irons before the season started and never looked back. I went from another company’s cavity backed to this new construction and love the feel it gives me off the fairways and from the tee box on par 3s. Worth every penny and now looking to replace my woods from another company with Titlest drivers.

i got a month ao the AP2s with the project X 6.0 and im very satisfied
i think they r great and they will keep up with the golf ball flight technology for a few more years/
about the new AP2 that will probably come out on christmas for a similar price to the “old” version/
thay must be more improved but u will score similar with the old ones too .
but just for the sake of having the new ones wait./
its always good to wait even that a lot of pga pros are happy with the old ones.
bottom line.
no harm will happen if u get the current ones but if u want to be modern and wait for the new back black plate look u should wait.
u wont regret it.

What’s the story behind the Pro V1x? I listened to a podcast about it with a Titleist representative saying it is a bunch of ludicrous comments to say it needs a high swing speed to really get the best parts out of the ball. But a lot of people right now are saying you have to have a club head speed of 115-130 to get a hold of it. What’s the truth?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 27, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Sam-
From Bill Morgan, Senior Vice-President of Golf Ball R&D:
Most of the tour-played balls are sufficiently optimized for somewhat ordinary launch conditions produced by both swing speeds over and under 100 mph. In fact, driver distance differences between different golf balls become lessened as swing/ball speeds go down. Most of the tour-played urethane multilayer golf balls available today are played daily by golfers worldwide. For eight years, Pro V1 has been the most successful of these with a U.S. market share that has been north of 20% for years. Most golfers have a swing speed under 100 mph, yet in the laboratory of golf courses worldwide they continue to select Pro V1 first. Furthermore, use of ALL tour-played urethane multilayer balls today dwarfs historical usage rates of tour played balata golf balls. Clearly these ball types ARE sufficiently optimized for MOST golfers of ALL swing speeds and golfers remind us of that everyday.

If a golf ball was struck perfectly by an AP1, AP2, MB, and CB all of the same loft, which ball would travel the farthest?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 25, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Kevin-
Maximum distance is not a particularly good comparison of the four models as they are designed to promote different trajectories and spin characteristics. The goal with iron design is to provide the player with their preferred combination of feel, looks, and shot control (forgiveness v workability as well as trajectory and distance control).

Kevin wrote on August 25, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I was just wondering whether a blade or cavity back hits the ball farther.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 25, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Scott-
As a combination set of cavity back and muscle back forged irons, your current 735.CMs would be most closely matched by a mixed set of CB and MB.

bryan wrote on August 25, 2009 at 4:11 pm

I have 735s as well and love them. I have been wondering the same thing. Could you give some more specifics as far as what model of CB and MB that Titleist currently offers that would make up that closest combination?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 25, 2009 at 5:22 pm

In the current irons line-up, the Z Blend Forged iron set most closely matches the 735.CM: http://www.titleist.com/golfclubs/irons/ZB.asp

On the other hand, are the new AP2s bigger from heel to toe? Are they designed to be a bit bigger and forgiving? Or are they staying the same size and changes are not noticed to the bare eye?

I am a premier junior golfer and a +1.8 handicapper and I have been playing the AP2s in competition for a little over 5 months. I absolutely love them. My only gripe is that they are a little harder for me to work shots with than blades. The best part of my game is my ball striking and I think I am getting Titleist blades at the beginning of next year. I have demoed and really like the Z Muscle blades. By this I mean will the grooves be smaller on the new sets? I have no intention of ever playing professionally, so I am not sure whether the old irons would be better for us.
Thanks

Hello,

I just bought a set of AP2 irons. I ordered a strong set so with -1 degree loft. When I got them it appeared to be +1 loft. Now the retailer is offering to bend the clubs 2 degrees. He suggested that that is what Titleist also does when fitting the clubs. Should I let him bend the clubs? And does Titleist bend the clubs to make them strong?

Regards,

Joe

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 20, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Joe-
Your golf shop is correct. For custom iron orders requesting strong or weak lofts, the irons are bent from standard to the requested loft. If you received an order that was not fulfilled correctly and do not want your golf shop to bend your clubs, you can have them contact Titleist Custom Clubs customer service or our Repairs Department to correct the situation.

Can you please explain the differences between cast and forged irons, and what sort of handicap each applies to? thanks

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 18, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Mike-
Forging and casting are two processes by which iron heads are manufactured. The forging process generally involves a mild carbon or stainless steel which is heated to a malleable state and then hammered into its finished form. The typical casting process consists of pouring liquefied stainless steel into a cast which, once cooled, yields the finished clubhead. Forged clubs are renowned for their greater feel, playability and versatility with regard to custom fitting options. They are also generally preferred by better players for their feel and playing characteristics, but are a suitable choice for golfers of all abilities.

I am now beginning my search for new irons. Been playing my 704 cb’s for a long time now. Very excited to try hitting these. Have tried other brands, but there is something about Titleist irons I love. The alignment and feel are unmatched in my opinion. Not to mention that even the newer irons of other brands still don’t go as far as my “old” 704s. Looking forward to getting these in my hands. They look SWEET!

Carl wrote on August 14, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Just ordered a set of AP2 irons. I tried them on Tuesday and found them to be incredible, can’t wait to get them. Had the full custom fit with my local professional. They were slightly more than i set out to pay, but when comparing them i couldnt have gone for anything else. Finishing them off with two Vokey wedges.

I was wondering if the new MB irons are available to demo and get fit for at the TPI in late August? What is the main difference between the new MB and the ZM irons? I have noticed that it is missing the Z Muscle design, and the MB shares more attributes with the 690s, which by the way are the best irons made in the history of golf!!!!!

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 18, 2009 at 6:21 pm

The new irons will be available for fittings at Oceanside later in the year, likely sometime in October.

What are the differences in the new AP2s? From what I can tell, the new ones look just like the ones I have…except for the paint fill on the cavity plate. The reason I ask is, I have beat my short irons to death practicing at home and I need to replace them.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 18, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Complete product details will be available on Titleist.com in early fall. Design changes to AP2 focused on improving the feel of all irons as well as turf interaction of the short irons.

How are the AP2 2007 in durability?? Also is it possible to become a Titleist staff member as a sophomore in high school? Because my friend caddied at a pro am for a Titleist staff member named Kyle Stanley, he told my friend that he had been with Titleist since sophomore year in high school. Any info on this? Would be really helpful.

Travis:

The best option is for you to actually hit them all yourself. The AP1 irons are still the most forgiving of all the Titleist irons. Check out FittingWorks.com and locate an authorized fitter in your area.

Thanks for the question.

Like most muscle back forged irons, the MBs will promote a lower trajectory than the other new Titleist irons. We already have several sets of the new MBs, as well as the CBs, AP2s and AP1s, in play on Tour.

chris wrote on August 10, 2009 at 9:14 am

when you say not offering, do you mean that they won’t be able to be costomized (by you guys), or that your taking them of the market. if you guys are taking them off the market how long after the new ones hit the market will they be no longer available.

on another note i want to get the 909 d3 and f3 but i don’t want to buy it and see it a new and better version come out a month later.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 10, 2009 at 10:38 am

Chris: Once we introduce the new irons, Titleist will no longer be selling them. However, there will always be a certain amount of lag time with original product in a golf shop and therefore would not be able to tell you exactly how long you could still get the original irons.

On your second note, we launched the new 909 line of drivers, fairways and hybrids last fall and do not currently have plans for a new line.

i have been playing cast clubs my whole life. i am now about a 9 and i wanted to buy the current AP2s (or 710 version). i was wondering about how durable forged clubs are in regard to the grooves and general chrome finish.

i have been playing my current irons for 6 years and they are in relatively good shape. can i expect the same out of the AP2 forged?

Mike wrote on August 25, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Hey Jeremy,
I play the AP2s and have had them for almost a year. I take really good care of my irons yet still have some gashes and bag chatter nics. If you find a stone in the turf with these clubs it will put a gash in it. I know personally. I do love my clubs and would never play a cast club again. The feel is unmatched. I highly suggest the change over to forged clubs. In my opinion they make you a better player because you can really feel the difference between a well struck golf shot and an ok golf shot. Hope this helps you.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 18, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Jeremy-
Sounds as if you take good care of your clubs…you should not have issues with the AP2s in terms of durability.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 18, 2009 at 6:09 pm

AP1 is cast, versus forged for AP2. AP1 is also going to be larger and more forgiving than AP2, with AP2 offering slightly more workability. We recommend working with an authorized Titleist FittingWorks partner later in the year when the new clubs become available for fitting to test your current AP2s against the new AP1s.

The CBs look amazing, can’t wait to get hold of a set (they remind me of 690s and 704s – no bad thing, I had 2 sets of 704s before switching to AP2s). Any ideas on standard shafts and lofts as yet?

I just took a look at the new MB irons, they look terrific. I just want to know if they are more or less forgiving than prior MBs.

Thanks.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 6, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Design goals for the new MB irons focused on providing improved feel, classic looks, and superior shot control for the highly skilled golfer. Forgiveness qualities should be similar to previous generation MB irons.

Stephen McQ wrote on August 5, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Stephen-
We recommend visiting a Titleist FittingWorks Partner and trying each of the models when they become available later this year. While the CB irons are not meant to be a specific replacement for the 775.CB, you and your fitter may find that they work for your game.

I bought a set of AP2 a month ago and I now see advertising “The New AP2.” Has the model changed since my purchase?

Also, I played another manufacturer’s irons, however I love your AP2 irons and have made the switch and I’m very happy. I used to play 6.0 Flighted Rifle shafts and your clubs came with 5.5 Project X. I find the dispersion is a lot tighter and the flight of my long irons are quite high. It’s all good, however, the feel of the Project X 5.5 is a little bigger in my hands and a bit “like a board.” Is this normal?

It’s nice to come back to Titleist, true and not gimmicky, just real golf!! Congrats!

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 5, 2009 at 1:05 pm

We’re testing the next generation AP2 irons on Tour right now, and expect this new model to be in golf shops later this year. We recommend contacting Precision, which is now owned by True Temper, to discuss the differences between their Rifle Flighted and Project X shafts.

The photo is misleading, the blade lengths of the ZM and MB are very similar.

Mark wrote on August 5, 2009 at 12:22 am

I’m curious at the comments on the AP2s by the tour players. Have there been many comments by those Tour players that have tried the AP2s that the toplines are too thick, chunky, etc? Especially in the scoring clubs? I know they’re not thick or chunky because the AP2s have a ROUNDED edge. If you squared off the edge then that would minimize some of it I’m sure. Its amazing how much a rounded edge can make things look bigger.

Just a side note, do the new AP2s have smaller toplines?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 5, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Mark-
Comments from the Tour on the AP2 irons has been overwhelmingly positive. It is by far our most popular model in play. When we asked for input on ways to improve the irons for this next generation, we received only a few suggestions, none of which focused on topline width.

Hi-
I was just wondering are the 2009 Spin Milled Vokeys conforming with the new groove regulations?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 4, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Craig-
Current generation Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges will not conform with the new groove regulations proposed by the USGA and R&A. Keep in mind, though, that the new regulations will only be invoked as a condition of competition at elite-level professional events (e.g., PGA Tour, U.S. Open, Open Championship) beginning in 2010. Most amateur golfers will be entitled to play with currently conforming clubs until 2024.

Andrew Bost wrote on August 4, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Do the tour pros have any problems using the AP2? The reason I ask is because most of these guys have been playing their entire lives so why do they need the extra forgiveness and all the other features? Are the ZMs and the new CB/MB irons that hard to hit? If the tour pros can’t use them then how would any of us use them? Are the CB/MB irons forged blades? We all understand that Titleist can’t give out much information but since club selection is such an important decision we just want to have at least an idea of which irons to pick. I can probably speak for most of us when I say that I will most likely try to preorder the irons the second they come out. Can you give any information on the skill set Titleist is aiming for with the different irons? Sorry for so many questions and thank you for your help.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on August 4, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Andrew-
The AP2 irons have been received tremendously on the worldwide tours since being introduced in late 2007. On tour, iron choice is largely a matter of personal preference (in terms of feel, ball flight, and workability) since all of the players at that level are skilled ball strikers. AP2, CB, and MB all feature forged 1025 carbon steel bodies, with AP2 additionally featuring a tungsten nickel sole and multi-material cavity insert to enhance feel and playability. Titleist FittingWorks partners are scheduled to have the new models in their SureFit carts in advance of the in store date. We recommend consulting with a fitter to help you determine the appropriate model(s) and specs for your style of play and ability.

Alex Christiansen wrote on August 4, 2009 at 12:25 pm

What is the actual distance difference between the Pro V1 and the Pro V1x? I like the idea of having a little extra spin around the greens with the Pro V1, but I don’t want to sacrifice a lot of distance off of the tee. I’m a 7 handicap and my driver swing speed is in the 105-110 mph range and my normal ball flight is a high draw. Thanks for the great products and outstanding website.

Titleist blog wrote on August 6, 2009 at 11:03 am

Alex-

There is more difference between the 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x than there was with the prior generation (2007) models. 2009 Pro V1 is the softer of the two and Pro V1x features a higher driver trajectory. While more players will hit longer drives with Pro V1x, they will be the most different off the tee when a player’s ball speed and spin are high. Conversely, lower speeds and spins may favor Pro V1 in this regard.

Pro V1 will spin more than Pro V1x for most shots. Pro V1 will spin more with the driver and more with irons. As speed decreases, the spin difference will lessen and lower speed players will experience less difference. While iron distance will be similar, it is very dependent on a player’s launch characteristics and depending upon his or her launch conditions, a player may experience greater iron distance with either Pro V1 or Pro V1x.

I have a Speeder 757 X flex in the D2 and Motore F1 X flex in the D3. I would like to have a swingweight of around D4 if this is possible. Thanks!!

I found the best way to get increased swingweight is, go to a Golf Pride Dual Durometer LITE grip. They can be found online…Golfworks. They add 3 points to swingweight, because it’s a 39 gram grip.

Do the new Titleist irons conform to the USGA’s new groove requirements? Or do they meet the current requirements–thus providing the same or better grip on the green from balls coming in from the rough? As opposed to less zip which golfers expect with the new groove rules coming in 2010.
