On the Range with Steve Stricker
July 5th, 2007
We spoke with Titleist ambassador Steve Stricker earlier this week as he prepared for the inaugural AT&T National at Congressional Country Club in suburban Washington D.C. This is Steve’s first tournament since contending in the U.S. Open in mid-June.
Steve’s set composition includes the new Pro V1 golf ball and thirteen Titleist golf clubs: Pro Titanium 905T driver (8.5°, UST Proforce V2), PT 906F2 fairway (13°, UST Proforce V2), PT 585.H utility (17°, Fujikura Speeder 904), 755 irons (3-P, Project X), and Vokey Design wedges (54° (bent to 53°) and 60°, Dynamic Gold with Sensicore).
Be sure to check out these photos from the range at Congressional…

Do any players choose to play different flexes within their irons? Like 6.5 in 4-6, soft-tipped 6.5 in the 7-9, and 6.0 in their wedges? Somewhat of a flatter frequency line?
None of our players does this within the iron set, although some do use softer flex shafts in their wedges.
What shaft flex does he use in his wedges?
Stiff flex.
What flex of Project X does Steve Stricker use? 6.0 6.5 7.0? Are they soft tipped or just standard trim?
Steve uses a Project X 6.5 Standard
What are the weights of the shafts that Steve Stricker and Adam Scott play? What are their swing speeds?
Where can one purchase Titleist shirts?
Titleist does not make golf shirts. The shirts worn by our Tour representatives are bought and embroidered by a third-party.
Which version of the Project X shafts is Steve using? Standard or flighted? Overall, do the Tour guys prefer the standard or the flighted?
Steve is using the standard Project X shafts, which is typical of our Titleist ambassadors who choose the Project X shaft.
What shafts does Steve use in his wedges? What shafts are the Titleist ambassadors that choose the standard Project X shafts for their irons typically using in their wedges? Do most stick with Project X, or the Rifle spinners, or something not made by Rifle all together?
As noted in the post, Steve uses Dynamic Gold with Sensicore shafts in his wedges. As far as which wedge shaft our iron Project X players use, there’s a little of everything. For example, Steve uses the DG with Sensicore as mentioned, Tom Pernice Jr. uses Rifle shafts, and Frank Lickliter II stays with the Project X.
Just wondering…the majority of Titleist players seem to play the Newport-style Scotty Cameron putters. Is there anyone who uses the Circa 62 line?
Most players use custom built Scotty Cameron putters that are classified as “prototypes.” While many of these are Newport-style putters, some of them are modeled after the Circa 62 line.
Is Adam still playing the 695MB irons?
Yes.
How long is Adam Scott’s driver shaft?
Adam’s driver length is 45″ finished.
What flex are the UST Proforce V2 shafts in Adam Scott’s and Steve Stricker’s driver and fairway, respectively?
X flex in both players’ driver and fairway.
Did Adam Scott change the loft on his driver recently when he changed his shaft? Love the site, love Titleist.
Yes, Adam went back to an 8.5° driver with the UST Proforce V2 shaft.
When players change shafts, are they also getting a new club head? Or, do players prefer to stick with the same club head and simply re-shaft? Do players develop a feel for a certain club head (within the same model)?
Sometimes a player will ask for a re-shaft, be we often just make up a completely new club so the player can work with both the old and new clubs to see which he prefers.
I know you guys don’t discuss future products that you plan to release, but I just found my old junior clubs, which are none other than the T-Rex junior set that you released years back. Just asking you to do another junior set! Thanks!
It looked like Adam Scott was playing a different shaft in his woods this week, if so what did he have in play? Thanks, love the blog.
Adam went back to the UST Proforce V2 shaft in his driver and fairway this week.
Why did Adam switch back to the V2?
Adam was looking for a different feel in his driver and fairway, and has had a lot of success with the UST Proforce V2 in the past.
I recently switched the stock shaft of my 906F2 with a UST Proforce V2 shaft. Great shaft, but it recently started making a strange buzzing sound at impact with the ball and when tapped lightly on the ground. Does anyone know what this sound could be?
We recommend taking your fairway back to the golf shop that made the repair to have them check the club out.
Huge Stricker fan…if he doesn’t win this week, it shall be soon! Great to see he is playing with the best clubs in the business….now you guys just need to get him some face time in your commercials! Everyone likes Strick!
I am a big fan of Steve Stricker. I even use a Titleist driver, too. Please forward on my support next time you see him. Thanks!
Peter B.
Steve is featured in two of our spots — “Working On: Nice Shirt” and “Titleist Ball Count” — which can be viewed on Titleist.com.
Great pics again. Keep on showing us what’s in the player’s bags. I really like Steve Stricker, but he should be rolling a Cameron! All of his other clubs are made by the best company, so he should make it a complete set.
I see more Tour players putting in the hybrid. For the 3-iron replacement, which is used more, steel or graphite? On the steel shaft for the hybrid, what is the normal tipping that is done?
Great post. I’m a huge Steve Stricker fan! What grinds does he use on his wedges? Are they Spin Milled or 200 Series?
Steve worked with Voke to get his wedges to his specifications, with the majority of the relief on the trailing edge. Both wedges are 200 Series.
